On the Move with Mads: Insights, Experience and Inspiration for Your Next Journey

If you answer the question “Where do your socks take you?”, where does your mind go first?
The first thing that pops up in my mind is adventure. I tend to connect merino wool socks to great nature experiences where performance meets nature.

When do you feelmost present and happy?
I have a thing for sunrises and sunsets. It can be around the corner by The Cliffs of Møn overlooking the Baltic Sea at sunrise or a sunset on a grand mountain ridge.
Those 30 minutes always make me happy and present, and this time kind of pauses the world for a bit. From a professional perspective, it is always my favourite time to work.

What do you look for when choosing your next destination?
I live in one of the flattest countries in the world, Denmark, and I am really drawn to mountains and big open nature. I enjoy returning to some of the same places to discover them in different seasons; it could be some of the national parks in Norway, like Hardangervidda. What I really love about my neighbouring countries, Norway and Sweden, is the easy access to nature and the right to camp freely in some of the most beautiful spots in the world.

How do you prepare for harsh and unpredictable conditions?
I spend a lot of time in nature, both for fun and work, and over the years I have learned a lot about the ups and downs of dramatic nature. Some of my most important rules are to always check the forecast and current conditions of the area: is there heavy rain coming, is there a chance of avalanches, and when does it get dark? When you know about those conditions, it is easier to dress and prepare for a good and safe experience.

Is there a small daily ritual you always bring with you, no matter where you are?
I really enjoy my morning coffee. At home, I have a pretty excessive espresso set-up, and when I am out there, I bring a minimal set-up that can still provide the same feeling, even in a simple tent somewhere. It is a fun and cosy element to keep in your routine, even though you are on the side of a freezing mountain and everything else is kept to a minimum.

What have your travels taught you about balance, happiness, and endurance?
Travelling has taught me a lot of things; the main thing is probably gratitude. For work, I have been documenting areas of the world where people do not have much, but they are incredibly generous and helpful to strangers like me. I have learned how some people and cultures care more about nature than they care about themselves and money, a way of life I think we can learn a lot from.

What advice would yougive to someone who wants to explore more, both near home and further away?
Keep it simple! The worst thing you can do is overthink an experience or an adventure and then stay at home or give up on it. Many people are waiting for the annual holiday before they can go out and explore, even though many adventures could be done in a single day around the corner. An adventure does not need to be on the other side of the world; it simply just needs to be a break from your everyday life. Even just taking the train to your local forest and preparing and eating your dinner away from the house could bring a breeze of adventure into your week.
What are your favourite Danish Endurance products?
I got my first Merino Classic hiking socks seven years ago, which are my all-time favourite for cold days in Denmark and for all kinds of hiking and being out all day for work in harsh conditions. Recently, I have become a huge fan of the pure merino wool T-shirt, simply because it can do it all. It is an amazing everyday T-shirt and also great for intense performance. For the next level, I love the EXTREME base layer – I recently spent some days in -31°C and had a great experience thanks to that heavy base layer.
